Apparent drowning victim in Kona identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii County Police have identified Garret Stanislav as the the man who died in an apparent drowning off Kona on Jan. 5.

Police say the 35-year-old from Mayfield, Ohio was near the bathrooms at O-Tech Beach when he fell in the water. Authorities say he was unable to to return to shore due to large waves.

Two men who were with Stanislav were seen trying to coach him to get back to land.

Police says by the time firefighters located Stanislav he was showing no signs of life.

Stanislav was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
