CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) - James Wilson only expected to work as a referee for maybe two or three seasons when he first picked up his whistle in 1972.

Fifty-two seasons later and he’s still at it.

“I like the intensity, the atmosphere,” Wilson said. “I just enjoy doing it.”

Wilson started his journey as an official at the age of 27 after playing basketball at the high school and collegiate level.

At 79 years old, Wilson’s still getting up and down the court with teenagers a quarter of his age in the Charlotte area.

“I don’t know if there’s a secret,” Wilson said. “I can tell you the Lord had his hand on me. I do know that.”

One big difference he’s noticed over five decades is the increase in parents vocalizing their displeasure with referees from the stands.

But he says the biggest difference he’s seen in the game has been on the court.

“The skillset has really increased,” Wilson said. “It’s a different game.”

Wilson has spent more than a half-century devoting his time and energy to high school basketball. He says every single season has been worth it as the years stack up.

“I probably have gotten as much or more out of the game than I’ve maybe put in,” Wilson said.

He admits that the end of his career is closer than it’s ever been. However, Wilson still feels like there’s something left in the tank.

“At this point, I feel like I still have something to offer,” Wilson said. “It’s been a journey, but a good one I’ve enjoyed.”
