MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The severe thunderstorm warning and flash flood warning have expired for Maui but the gusty winds remain Friday morning.

At 6 a.m., the National Weather Service said the severe thunderstorms were beginning to weaken and exit the area to the southwest at 10 mph, but winds still remain strong to severe across Maui with 60 mph wind gusts.

During the brunt of the thunderstorms, radars showed rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour and wind gusts up to 70 mph.

NWS said water levels in streams rose significantly, especially in the Hanawi Stream and Oheo Gulch.

Forecasters said pea-sized hail is possible and runoff impacting vulnerable low lying areas and roads is likely through daybreak.

The public is urged to stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even if they are currently dry, and seek shelter in a sturdy structure. The severe weather could also damage roofs, down trees, flood roads, and trigger landslides.

Widespread wind damage was reported across the island, including downed trees, power outages and school closures. Click here to view a full list of impacts on Maui.
