HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new pilot program launched by Malama Maunalua (in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu) aims to reduce the amount of water that enters the city’s municipal stormwater system. The program can provide free rainwater capture solutions to home owners and renters

The city’s Department of Facility Maintenance is working to get the word out and share the benefits of capturing rain water for the environment.

“We’re thrilled to co-lead this pilot program initiative. We look forward to further fulfilling our department’s mission of empowering individuals to maximize their ability to capture rainwater to help cherish our island’s freshwater and improve ocean water quality to protect the public’s health and the environment,” said Gene Albano, Director and Chief Engineer of the Department of Facility Maintenance.

Malama Maunalua says with limited funding, interested residents should apply now to the pilot program which is open until March 31st 2025.

“Addressing stormwater runoff is one of the great challenges to protecting our environment and communities. Only by the public proactively participating can we hope to adequately address the issue,” said Doug Harper, from Malama Maunalua. “I’m excited about this opportunity and look forward to demonstrating how we as a community can protect our island and ourselves.”
