A Maui mother of two is still buzzing after getting to surf in her first-ever Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

Landon McNamara won the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational with 135.8 points. He also had the highest-scoring wave of the competition.

First-time competitors make up half of the top 10 after round one, and several are second-generation big wave surfers.

Three surfers are now out of "The Eddie" due to injuries.

Eddie Aikau was a legendary waterman who served as the first lifeguard for the North Shore, including Waimea Bay, and saved over 500 people throughout his career.

The city will implement a variety of procedures to ensure the safety and enjoyment of surfers, staff, and spectators at Waimea Bay Beach Park.

Most of the activity will be north of Haleiwa watching the contest, but the town is still expecting to see a bit more business once the meet is over.

Contest Director Liam McNamara confirmed the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is on for Sunday.

The group Malama Pupukea-Waimea said it collected 500 pounds of debris that had been washed into the bay after the last Eddie.

“In order to run this event, we have to have a good solid eight hours of waves over 40 feet.”

Dozens of surfers gathered for the paddle-out ceremony at Waimea Bay Friday afternoon.
