HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Federal investigators, along with the Honolulu Fire Department, have determined a deadly three-alarm blaze that claimed the life of a Honolulu firefighter was accidental.

HFD says unattended cooking in the kitchen sparked flames Jan. 6 at a two-story building on Young Street, in the McCully area of Honolulu.

Jeffrey Fiala, 25, died battling the fire, and four other firefighters were also hurt.

A resident was also injured and, at last check, was still in the hospital.

Fiala is the 24th firefighter statewide to die in the line of duty.

Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan says a public memorial service and procession is tentatively planned for Jan. 25.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Fiala’s family.
