Man charged in New Year’s Eve assault of EMS workers
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 47-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in the assault of two Emergency Medical Services workers on New Year’s Eve.
Arsenio Vargas was charged with two counts of second-degree assault.
According to the city prosecutor’s office, the first responders were treating Vargas when he became agitated, and kicked an EMT and punched a paramedic.
“Our first responders have a difficult job protecting and caring for those in our community who are harmed or ill,” said Prosecutor Steve Alm. “We must take care of those who are entrusted with caring of our community.”
Vargas is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in lieu of $11,000 bail.
Assault of an Emergency Medical Services provider while he or she is engaged in performing his or her duties is a Class C Felony and punishable up to five years in prison.
